There are generally 3 types of travel reward cards

Airline cards - these cards link to individual airline programs. One good example would be the AAdvantage card by American Airline. So, you are stuck with American Airline as your only flight choice then? Not exactly, AA has teamed up with dozens of international airlines such as Cathay Pacific, British Airways, FinnAir, and many more to allow you redeem points for any flight via their partnered airlines.

Hotel Cards - these cards supplement rather than replace airline reward cards. By using these specialized hotel cards such as the Starwood card you get to stay at the hotel at a discount rate while earning points toward future stays.

Airline Miles Cards - they are not made for a specific airline. You can choose from hundreds of airlines, hotels, and car rentals to redeem your rewards. Earn at least 1 point for very dollar you spend. Some cards give you more points when you shop at certain places such as gas stations, supermarkets, and drugstores. However, there is usually a limit on how many points you can earn each calendar year. And some cards charge an annual fee for the reward programs.
